Who Pays for Hospice?

Hospice is a healthcare benefit covered by  Medicare, Medicaid,  VA  including Tricare,  and  most commercial insurance plans. Hospice care, medications, durable medical equipment, and supplies related to the patient’s terminal illness are covered by most insurance providers at 100%.

Hospice care is part of the Veterans Health Administration benefits package. Veterans are eligible for care if they are enrolled in benefits and meet a medical need for hospice. Expenses for hospice-related services are covered at 100%.

If a patient has a Medicare Advantage plan or other Medicare health plan at the time they elect hospice services, traditional Medicare covers cost related to the patient’s terminal illness even if the patient chooses to remain in their Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare health plan. In this instance, patient’s will continue to pay their plan’s premium and deductible for services non-related to their terminal illness (such as dental or vision).
